How to Keep Your Toddler Calm During Their Dental Appointment

Posted .

If you’re like many parents in the world today, you struggle to keep your toddler calm, comfortable and entertained in the dental chair. This can make pediatric dental appointments frustrating and quite exhausting. Our dentist, Dr. Sophie Baird, and dental team want you and your child to have the best and most successful appointment possible. So, we’re happy to work with you to help make that happen. To help us, we recommend doing the following things:

-Stay calm during the appointment. Your child can tell when you are uptight, anxious or nervous. If they notice it, they will likely start to feel that way as well.

-Hold your child’s hand during the appointment. This can comfort your child while they receive treatment.

-Give your child calming music to listen to. This can help slow their heart rate and even keep their mind off the treatment.

-Let your child watch their favorite television show or movie on your mobile device. This can distract them during treatment.

-Avoid using scary words like shot, hurt or pain. Using scary words will likely make your child nervous, which will make them feel uncomfortable and anxious in the dental chair.
